The Joint Communication, Social Justice and Democracy IAMCR Working Group conference & ECREA 2026 pre-conference focuses on the constructive force of hope, addressing visions, discourses, and practices of hope for democracy, peace, and justice, as articulated in media representations and communicative practices. It will feature keynote speeches by Ilija Tomanić Trivundža and Nico Carpentier.

Ilija Tomanić Trivundža is an Associate Professor at the Chair of Media and Communication Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana and a researcher at the Center for Social Communication Research. His primary research interest spans across the field of visual communication with special focus on the social and political role of photography in contemporary mediated communication. He also investigates journalism from the perspective of the processes of collective identification. His current research focus is on issues of new visibility and historical development of press photography.

Nico Carpentier is an Extraordinary Professor at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic), and Visiting Professor at Tallinn University (Estonia) and at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (Suzhou, China). He was Vice-President of the European Communication Research and Education Association (2008-2012) and President of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (2020-2024). His research is situated in the relationship between communication, politics, and culture, especially towards social domains such as war & conflict, ideology, participation, and democracy.
