Democracy and Media in Europe: A Discursive-Material Approach, review

By Martin Bubanović

Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media

This article reviews the book Democracy and Media in Europe: A Discursive-Material Approach, written by Nico Carpentier and Jeffrey Wimmer, as part of the MeDeMAP project.

The book provides a theoretical reflection on the intersection of democracy and media through a constructionist lens.

The book provides theoretical support to the MeDeMAP project aimed at setting out future-proof pathways to strengthen democracy through improving accountability, transparency and effectiveness of media production and expanding active and inclusive citizenship. The research project studies the extent to which certain media under which conditions perform which democratic functions for which audiences, thus making it apparent what is at stake for democratic media – and for democracy itself. The book by Carpentier and Wimmer is at the very center of these discussions and the project itself.
