“This Is How Democracy Should Work”: Participants on the First Citizens’ Assembly on Media and Democracy in Czechia

Democracy can have different meanings and be practiced in various ways, depending on how different political and social actors understand democratic governance. This EJO article, written by Klára Odstrčilová, explores these ideas through the lens of the MeDeMAP research project. The project examines how democracy is constructed across Europe and the role of media in democracies. As part of the project, a Czech Citizen Parliament was held. This assembly brought together ordinary people who discussed the media’s roles in a democratic society. The Parliament voted on different recommendations in these matters and produced multiple resolutions, thus offering a unique example of participatory democracy in practice.
